Erin 5-3 over Schomberg
A first period with a five minute major may have made all the difference in Thursday's game in Schomberg against the Erin Shamrocks.
After scoring early in the game the Shamrocks capitalized on the powerplay to take a two-goal lead going into the second period.
Erin goals came from Josh Gault and Rob Mair.
But the second period was all in the Cougars hands as they battled back and played a solid twenty minutes.
Brandon Yorke lit up the board for the Cougars when he picked up a rebound and placed the puck to the back of the net.
A third Erin goal put the pressure back on Schomberg.
The Cougars' Andy McBride got the slick effort of the game at 6:20 in the second period when he broke through the middle of the Shamrock's defence and then was pulled down in front of the goal - but he still managed to get the shot away and scored Schomberg's second of the game.
It was looking good in the third period when Peter Kalpakis notched number three for the Cougars to make it a tie game at just 14 seconds into the final frame.
But the Shamrocks took the lead at the midway mark on a goal by Tyler Ferreira, then took the game when Ferreira did it again with 35 seconds left on a shot rifled from the point.
Despite the loss the Cougars played a solid three periods and excelled on the powerplay.
"I think the whole team played well," said Cougars head coach Sandy Bell. "It was the best 60 minutes we've played all year."
Indeed, the Cougars are looking fast this season and are executing well producing was great set ups in front of the net.
The first period penalties, Bell said, was something they just had to get past.
"We played 11 minutes short-handed. I told them that if this is the worst , we're ok."
The squad has been working on the powerplay and when they had the advantage the team did an exceptional job.
"This year we seem to have more puck control," Bell said, "Now we've got to get the shots on net."
The Cougars will travel to Fergus tonight (Sept. 30) to take on the Devils with an 8:30 p.m. start.
They returnt to home ice at the Trisan Centre on Thurdsay, October 6, to host the Caledon Golden Hawks. Game time is 8:30 p.m.
