Hornets post double losses
Cougars fall to Flyers
Late game scoring determines the final
From a fan perspective, Thursday's game at the Trisan Centre in Schomberg between the Schomberg Cougars and the Midland Flyers was a pretty exciting evening of hockey.
The Cougars opened the scoring in the first period with goals from Kyle Bishop and Pol Gonzales, only to be matched by a pair from Midland with Braiden Burnett and Brandon QuoVadis.
Schomberg's Nikolai Borschevsky gave the Cougars a goal lead on a powerplay effort just :40 seconds into the second period.
But a Midland reponse again tied the game, then moved the Flyers ahead with a second short-handed effort by the time the clock hit 1:32 into the frame.
Flyers goals came from Curtis Warren and Dyer Boyne.
The Cougars battled back with Tyler Smilsky notching a goal at 3:26.
With so much scoring action happening in a short period of time, fans were wondering what was going to happen next.
Despite playing a fast and furious game, the Cougars just couldn't find the back of the net for the rest of the game.
Midland scored two more in the second, then followed up with a final powerplay goal early in the third period.
Flyers goals came from Cody Beasley, Jesse Stoddart, and Ryan Stapleton.
Despite what seemed to be a very fast and exciting game from the stands, seeing the game through the eyes of an experienced coach tells a different story.
"We were up two on them. They outplayed us out worked us, and out-shot us. It was all individual, there was no team effort, Everyone thinks they need to take the puck and light things up for the team, but your can't do it that way," said Cougars head coach Sandy Bell.
Although Bell expressed dissapointment at the result of this game, you've got to give credit where it is due when it comes to the success of the squad this year.
Since taking over the head spot on the bench this season, Bell and his staff have worked well with the squad - already beating their points total from all of last season - and turning out some pretty stellar performances from the players.
Even when they took some losses, fans have seen some excellent hockey from the Schomberg squad.
Under Bell's direction, a key performance improvement this season has been the team's ability to hang on to a lead going into the late stages of a game - something they had trouble with last year.
With six games left in the regular season, its still too early to tell how the playoffs will shape up, but with the current points totals holding pretty steady, the Cougars may be seeing Penetang in the first round of the playoffs - but that could change real quick.
The Cougars will be back on home ice this Thusday, January 12, to face the Erin Shamrocks.
The puck drop is scheduled for 8:30 p.m.
