Hornets post double losses
Toronto Argonaut running back/slotback, Andre Durie speaks to players and parents during an Orangeville Outlaws football club open house. The event took place on Saturday, January 21, in the dome at ACTS Fitness in Orangeville. The Outlaws have an expanded program this season with five divisions and a house league getting ready to go for the summer season beginning in May.
The increase in both number of players and divisions bodes well for the Outlaws as they strive to teach younger players the nuances of the sport - and that translates into stronger, more knowledgeable teams in the future.
“We’re striving for the tyke program,” says club vice president Lee Nolan, “We’re going pedal to the metal and we want all divisions playing this year.”
At the tyke level the kids are six and seven years old. At that age, most of the kids are focused on just staying upright during the game - the weight of the helmet and shoulder pads can make a young player top heavy.
The good thing about the tyke program - aside from the fact that the tykes really enjoy the game - is that they learn about what is actually a pretty complicated sport.
Coaches work with the players on skills and positioning on the field.
By the time the tykes get into the peewee and bantam divisions they are well skilled and know what it takes to play a good game.
This season the tyke division is already filling up.
“We haven’t really had to recruit,” Nolan explained. “They’re coming to us.”
The club will also have peewee, bantam, junior varsity, and varsity division teams on the field this year as well and the house league program.
Next stop for the Outlaws will be their winter indoor training camp at the Orangeville Fair Grounds.

Outlaws host pre-season open house
Argonaut Andre Durie makes special appearance
by Brian Lockhart

It may be only January but already the Orangeville Outlaws football club are planning for summer league action with a pre-season open house.
The open house was held in the dome at ACTS Fitness in Orangeville on Saturday, January 21.
Special guest Andre Durie of the Toronto Argonauts tossed the football with some aspiring young players and took the time to talk to players and parents alike.
Durie is a running back and current slotback for the Argos.
The Outlaws are expanding this season with five rep teams and a house division league. That’s a huge increase considering last season they only had two divisions in the travelling leagues.
“Already, our numbers are up this year,” said club president Freda Almeida, “Our goal is to make it to the playoffs in each of our rep divisions and bring more awareness to football in Orangeville.”
