Midland Twins captured their first-ever junior championship in the North Dufferin Baseball League on Sunday with a 6-5 victory over the Richmond Hill Phoenix.
Midland along with Richmond Hill and Bolton Braves competed in the finals, which featured a two-day tournament at Bolton.
The Braves were knocked out Saturday after two losses to Midland 7-3 and Richmond Hill 10-9.
The Twins and Phoenix met Saturday evening where Midland outscored Richmond Hill 10-0. Because the tournament was a double knockout affair, the two teams met Sunday morning for a final game.
The championship game was tight for the first three innings until Midland scored a run in the bottom of the third. Over the next two frames, Midland scored five runs and the game looked to be a runaway with the Twins leading 6-0 heading into the sixth inning. However, the Phoenix bounced back scoring five runs on three hits to bring the game within one.
Midland held off Richmond Hill during their last bat to win the game 6-5 and take the championship.
Midland accepted the championship cup from North Dufferin League secretary and junior division convenor Scott Anderson following the game.
