Friday Night Fights came to Mississauga's Hershey Center on Friday, June 24.
Defending his NABA lightweight title was Orangeville's own LoganMcGuinness.
His opponnent in this 10 round match was Daniel Ruiz (23-3-1,16KO's) of Mexico.
The McGuinness team went in to the fight
not knowing much about Ruiz and his fighting style so Logan had to go into this fight respecting Ruiz's record.
He would have to figure out his stategy as the fight progressed. McGuinness's style is to come out fighting, trapping his opponent in the corner and making short work of him. Ruiz proved to be a formidable match as he held his ground throughout the fight.
Early in the eight round Ruiz unloaded a punch that stunned McGuinness and made his knees buckle and opened up a cut
under his eye.
The crowd went wild cheering on McGuinness to somehow stay on his feet. That bell couldn't come soon enough for him. The opening of the 9th round saw McGuinness back in the fight but in the
10th it was dejavu.
Ruiz caught McGuinness with a solid left hook and again he was weakened.
The crowd was heard to call out to Logan to
"take the knee". He refused.
This fighter was determined to win and to
fight with honour.
McGuinness won a majority decision with scores of 96-94, 95-95 and 96-94.
We look forward to McGuinness's next fight
this August against Benoit Gaudet (24-2 10KO's).
The co feature on the card were Ottawa's Tyler Asselstine (5-0 4KO's) against France's Leonus Marie-Francoise (8-4 2KO's). Asseltine was knocked down in the first round by a left hook.
He recovered and went on to win this 6 round super featherweight match with scores of
58-55,58-55 and 59-55.
Also on the card were matches featuring Dillon Carman in his professional debut against Sergio Romano of Italy.
Carman won by unanimous decesion. Ibrahim Kamal defeated Istvan Kiss of Hungary when the fight was called at 1:45 of the first round.Brandon Cook also made
fast work of Laszlo Haaz of Hungary in the first round. The ref seemed to call this fight too soon though. Phil Rose (2-1,2KO's) fought Horace Hunter (1-3,0KO's).
This exciting fight ended in a draw.
Another exciting fight on the card featured Orangeville's Ryan Wagner (2-1 1KO) against Dunnville's Jeremy Abbott (2-1 1KO). Abbott got pinned in the corner in the third of four rounds and the ref called it
at 45 seconds.
