Hennessey Sports Canada in association with Interbox promotions
and United Promotions held an action packed seven fight card at the
packed Hershey Centre in Mississauga, Ontario.
It was definitely one of the best fight cards in Canadian boxing history!
This fight card was broadcasted live on Hall Of Famer Al Bernstein’s
www.boxingchannel.tv who was in attendance as well as on Rogers
TV.
In the main event Logan Cotton McGuinness of Orangeville, Ontario
remains undefeated at 15-0-1, 7KO’s by knocking out the former
World title challenger Benoit Gaudet, now 24-2, 10KO’s of
Drummondville, Quebec at 1:56 of the eleventh round to
win the vacant NABA Super Featherweight championship.
In the opening round McGuinness came straight at Gaudet looking
to set the pace of the fight behind his jab and combinations to
the head and body.
Gaudet moved a lot around the perimeter of the ring looking to
counter punch but it was mostly ineffective. The second round
saw much of the same action as Gaudet fought backing up as
Cotton tried to keep the pressure on and cut off the ring but it was
hard to do and he spent more time chasing Gaudet. Early in the
round there was an accidental clash of heads that opened a bad
cut over McGuinness’s left eye. As the round progressed was
occasionally able to freeze Gaudet with hooks to the body and
rights to the head. Rounds three through five saw the cagey veteran
Gaudet continue to try to lure McGuinness in and make him miss
so that he could counter punch. McGuinness continued to follow
Gaudet around the ring only landing one punch at a time for the
most part.McGuinness was able to get to Gaudet in the sixth round
as he cut him over the left eye and pinned him on the ring and was
able to land left hooks to the body then he mixed in the uppercut
and the right hand. By rounds end Gaudet had significant swelling
under his right eye and McGuinness’s left eye continued to bleed
freely.
Rounds seven and eight saw much of the same action as the first
part of the fight and it was a difficult fight to score. McGuinness
controlled the ninth and tenth rounds as he was able to walk down
Gaudet and punished him along the ropes.
When McGuinness was able to catch Gaudet he was able to punish
him with the much harder and cleaner punches. This was a very
difficult fight to score through ten rounds as the judge’s had to
decide to give Gaudet credit for his constant circling and counter
punching to build up points or for McGuinness who tried to make
it a fight and landed the harder but fewer punches throughout the
fight. Finally in the eleventh round McGuinness’s pressure was too
much for Gaudet as he was able to land the right hand on the
button followed by the left hook that dropped Gaudet into the ropes
and face down on the canvass with his eyes rolling back.
Gaudet bravely made it back to his feet but was still out of it forcing
the referee to call an end to the fight.aaVargas Stops Cheikho In
Grudge MatchIn the semi main event Sammy “The Bull” Vargas of
Mississauga, Ontario remains undefeated at 8-0, 1KO by stopping
Ahmad “The Boss” Cheikho, now 6-4-2, 5KO’s of Montreal at the 3:oo
mark of the fifth round in a Welterweight fight. This fight was an all
out war that saw Vargas looking out of it early but Vargas’s will
power made all the difference as he was able to fight through
everything that Cheikho could throw at him. This was one of the
best fights in recent Canadian boxing history.
There was a lot of bad blood between these two fighters as they
almost came to blows earlier in the day at the weigh in and as
Vargas was circling the ring he got in Cheikho’s face and verbally
lashed the Montreal fighter. In a sizzling opening round Cheikho
was all over Vargas tagging him with combinations to the head
that confused and backed up the Mississauga fighter. However, near
the midway point of the round Vargas landed a perfect left hook to
the liver that dropped Cheikho to his back. Cheikho was able to
beat the count and got right back into the fight trading hard power
punches for
the rest of the round.Vargas came out much better in the second
round as he traded hooks with Cheikho forcing him back to the ropes where he mixed up his combinations to the head and body. Cheikho was able to circle off of the ropes and mid way through the round Cheikho caught Varagas on the chin and dropped him face down on the canvass.
Vargas beat the count with a bloodied nose and was on the defensive and survived the rest of the round.Vargas’s left eye started to swell significantly and his nose was bleeding as well in the third round as he seemed to have no answer for Cheikho’s left hook and straight right hands.
Both fighters stood toe to toe trading power shots in a see saw round. In a big momentum shift the fourth round was all Vargas as
he swarmed and punished Cheikho throughout eventually pinning him on the ropes and with a barrage of punches dropped Cheikho to all fours.
A wobbling Cheikho made it back to his feet but Vargas was all over him and continued the assault backing Cheikho to the corner and
dropped him for a second time in the round with another left hook to the body. Cheikho barely made it back to his feet as the bell rang
saving him. Cheikho had no answer for Vargas’s pressure or his left hooks to the body. The fifth round was nearly a carbon copy of the
fourth as Vargas punished an exhausted Cheikho and eventually dropped him with mere seconds left in the round. Cheikho beat the count and made it back to the corner however he did not come out for the start of the sixth round.aCook Unleashes Hell On FletcherBrandon “Bad Boy” Cook, of Ajax, Ontario remains undefeated at 3-0, 1KO as he dominated Darren Fletcher, now 1-2 of Brantford, Ontario by a 40-36, 40-36 and 39-37 unanimous decision in a Super Welterweight fight. An aggressive Cook pressed the action early in the opening round by loading up and landing bombs to the body and head of Fletcher that forced him on the defensive, backpedalling and circling away to try to survive the storm. Cook continued the relentless punishment ripping hooks to the body and head for the rest of the fight and was in complete control.
Cook was able to draw blood from Fletcher’s nose in the second round and his nose bled profusely for the rest of the fight. To his credit Fletcher managed to stay on his feet for the entire fight even after absorbing hellacious punishment from Cook.aAbbott Destroys
McBainJeremy Abbott, of Dunnville, Ontario improves to 3-2, 2KO’s by demolishing Harrison King McBain, now 3-4-1 of Hamilton, Ontario
stopping him a 1:56 of the opening round. This fight had special significant because the recently deceased legendary Canadian trainer Hank Boone of Niagara Falls boxing club had trained both of the fighters.Early in the round Abbott caught McBain with a hook to the temple that dropped the Hamilton fighter. McBain made it back to his feet but Abbott was right on top of him and dropped McBain moments later with a left hook right hand combination that landed right on the button.
McBain again gallantly made it back to his feet but again Abbott swarmed him with a volume of punches backing McBain to the ropes and covering up which forced the referee to call a halt to the
contest.aThompson ImpressesLionell “Lonnie B” Thompson of Buffalo remains undefeated and moves to 10-0, 6KO’s scoring a 60-54 x 3 unanimous decision victory over Abdullah Ramadan, now 15-11, 9KO’s of Toronto in a scheduled six round Light Heavyweight contest. Ramadan was a 1988 Olympian from Sudan. The much quicker Thompson started out hesitant to let his hands go in the opening round as he studied Ramadan however as the round progressed he got down to boxing and used feints and his jab effectively to set up his combinations.
As the fight progressed Thompson out boxed Ramandan and let his hands go more landing jabs and used his excellent speed, footwork and angles
to tag Ramadan to the head and body drawing blood from his nose in the second round and momentarily staggering the Sudanese Canadian fighter midway through the third. With seconds left in the fifth round Thompson landed a sneaky right hand that opened a significant cut over Ramadan’s left eye. Lionell needs to let his hands go more and seize the opportunities and openings that his skills give him. Thompson,
who fights for Hennessey Sports Canada has the skills for a very promising future.aCarman Makes Quick Work Of FranjicNext up was a
scheduled four round Heavyweight bout that saw Dillon Carman of Mississauga, Ontario earn the second victory of his career over Gord
“The Gravedigger” Franjic of Orangeville, by TKO at :39 of the opening round . This was Franjic’s pro debut.Carman came out and picked his
spot by countered with a hard right hand to the temple that dropped Franjic hard to the canvass. Franjic made it back to his feet only to
be dropped a second time by a straight right on the button. Referee Mark Simmons wisely called a halt to the bout immediately.aSpence
Remains UndefeatedIn the opening contest of the evening Natasha “The Nightmare” Spence of Kitchener, Ontario improves to 3-0-1, 2KO’s by
winning a 40-36 x 2 and 39-37 unanimous decision victory over Lucia Larcinese of Montreal who drops to 4-8.The opening round saw the
faster Spence land the harder punches and had Larcinese back peddling for most of the round. Spence utilized her jab well and put a solid
right hand behind it. Larcinese had a much better second and third rounds however Spence was able to land the more telling blows and
continued to control the fight. In an all action fourth round both fighters left it all in the ring going toe to toe until the final
bell.
