Sports Revew North Dufferin League Championship

The Bolton Brewers capped off another successful season winning their third straight North Dufferin Baseball League championship on Saturday by defeating the New Lowell Knights 8-4 in game seven of the championship series.

In an unusual series which was first dominated by New Lowell, who won the first three games, the momentum changed completely and Bolton won the final four games to take the best of seven affair. The Knights victories were by scores of 1-0, 7-1, and 6-1. The Brewers fought back, winning 4-3, 2-0, 5-3 and Saturday's game seven 8-4.

The Brewers got out to an early 2-1 lead after the first inning of the championship game and never looked back. They added single runs in the second and fourth frames, three in the fifth and one in the sixth. The Knights followed up their first inning run with one in the sixth and two more in the seventh inning.

Bolton's ace Mike Blackwood pitched a complete seven innings to record the win. He allowed four runs, five hits, four walks, one hit batsman and had three strikeouts.

Brandon Norrie pitched four innings for New Lowell and gave up four runs, five hits, walked four, hit one batter and struck out two Brewers. Steve Baldry threw the last two innings and allowed four runs, four hits, one walk, two hit batters and had strikeout.

The Brewers recorded nine hits including singles from Brett Bond, Pat Warden and Shawn Chalmers with two, a double by Stephen Warden, a pair of doubles by Mike Wallace and a double and single from Brett Chater.

The Knights five hits came from Baldry and Dale Lightheart recording singles, a double by John Patterson and a double and homerun by Dale Marsden.

League Secretary Scott Anderson was on hand to present the Strother Cup to Bolton, which was accepted by Stephen Warden and Mike Blackwood.
